UK Security Forces on Stand-By for More Riots

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned there is intelligence that more anti-immigration protests are planned for the coming days. The warning comes after the disruptive riots anticipated for August 7 did not materialize. Instead, large counter-protests took place in cities that have recently experienced large waves of riots targeting institutions that process migrants, like immigration law firms and hotels that house asylum speakers. Protests, counter-protests, mass arrests, and riots have been taking place since a mass stabbing incident in the northwestern town of Southport in late July. Misinformation spread that the attacker was a Muslim immigrant, which prompted a week of violent protests that often escalated into riots across UK cities. However, violent protests have deescalated in recent days, likely because of the security crackdown, which has seen mass arrests and calls for lengthy prison terms for those participating.

Moldovan Election Commission Refuses to Register Pro-Russian Political Party for Upcoming Elections

The Moldovan Central Electoral Commission (CEC) announced it will not register the pro-Russian Victory coalition for the upcoming October presidential election and referendum on joining the European Union. The CEC explained it identified problems with Victory's registration documents and requested the bloc remedy the errors, however, Victory insisted there were no errors and ignored the CEC's request. The CEC noted that several leaders listed on Victory's documents are under Western sanctions, and therefore cannot legally represent the bloc in the upcoming elections. If the CEC's decision stands, it would bar prominent pro-Russian officials from participating in the two key votes; however, Victory is highly likely to appeal the decision.

Events Canceled over Possible Terror Plot in Vienna

Police made arrests over an apparent plot to launch an attack on an event in the capital Vienna area, such as the concerts. The most notable event cancellation was a series of concerts by Taylor Swift. One of those arrested reportedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) after becoming radicalized on the internet. An IS suicide bomber targeted a concert in Manchester, UK, in 2017, killing dozens. Since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023, authorities have issued several security warnings over the heightened risk of a terror attack on large gatherings. Despite the warnings issued, it is very unlikely that the Islamic State (IS) or similar groups have the capability to carry out a large-scale coordinated attack on a high-security event. Rather, security forces are more likely concerned about the risk of lone wolves hitting soft targets, such as concertgoers gathered away from the venue.
