Flight Restrictions to Lebanon Until at Least August 11
Air France announced they would keep in place flight restrictions to Lebanon until at least August 11, due to the likelihood of an increase in military activity between Israel and Lebanon. Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, who operate in Lebanon, have been heightened since two key leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah were killed a week ago. Both Iran and Hezbollah have vowed retaliation, which will likely take the form of mass rockets and artillery strikes, while Israel is also rumored to be planning preemptive attacks.
Venezuela Bans Social Media Platform X While Increasing Arrests of Activists
President Nicolas Maduro signed a 10-day decree blocking access to social media platform X after Elon Musk posted support for the opposition, which claimed to have won in the July 28 presidential elections. Earlier in the week, Maduro targeted WhatsApp because opposition protesters were using it to organize events. Venezuelan government websites have also been targeted by hacktivists, while the government claims there was a cyberattack on election infrastructure during the voting period.
Bulgarian Parliament Approves Law on Introduction of the Euro
Bulgaria’s National Assembly approved the second and final reading of legislation introducing the euro, along with amendment to the Credit Institutions Act related to the euro adoption. The legislation was approved with 167 in favor, 48 against, and 13 abstentions. The Council of the EU will determine the exact date for introduction of the euro in Bulgaria. For one month after the euro’s introduction, both the euro and the lev will be legal tender. After this period, only the euro will remain legal tender. For six months after the euro’s introduction, banks will exchange leva banknotes and coins for the euro free of charge. The bill also includes regulations for adapting information systems, cash registers, and accounting documents to the euro.
