China Admits Hong Kong-Flagged Ship Damaged the BalticConnector in 2023
On August 12, China admitted a Hong Kong-flagged ship "accidentally" destroyed the BalticConnector pipeline that connects Finland and Estonia during an October 2023 incident. Chinese authorities insisted a strong storm caused the NewNew Polar Bear to drag its anchor across the seabed floor, damaging the pipeline. Finnish officials earlier this year said they suspected a Chinese vessel in the vicinity of the BalticConnector was responsible for the damage. Finnish and Estonian officials have not yet said whether they accept Beijing's explanation that the incident was "accidental."
Israeli Military Strikes Multiple Targets in Southern Lebanon
On August 12, the Israeli military carried out a series of bombing and artillery strikes on multiple targets in southern Lebanon. The primary targets were military buildings belonging to Hezbolalh, and the areas struck were Wadi Hamoul, Ramyeh, Aita Al-Shaab, and Kafr Kila. Several reports speculated that Iran and the country’s proxies may strike against Israel this week, and as early as within the next 24 hours. Western intelligence officials indicated that Tehran has taken “significant preparatory steps in its missile and drone units,” indicating that the strike package could be similar to April 2024, when Iran launched approximately 300 drones and missiles at Israel.
Indefinite Doctors’ Strike at Public Hospitals in India
On August 12, doctors at numerous Indian public hospitals began an indefinite strike to demand better workplace security after the alleged rape and murder of a resident doctor. Strike action is most pronounced in the city of Kolkata, where the alleged incident took place, but has spread to several other urban centers including Delhi. Staff at private hospitals are not engaged in the action at this time. The action could grow in size in the coming days and could potentially escalate to a complete cessation of service provision at public hospitals if organizers feel their demands are unmet.
