Indonesia Shelves Plan to Revise Election Law as Protests Rage
Indonesia's parliament postponed a vote on changes to electoral laws following violent protests in Jakarta. The proposed changes, which would have reversed recent constitutional court rulings, were seen as benefiting outgoing President Joko Widodo and his successor, Prabowo Subianto, by hindering opposition leader Anies Baswedan's ability to run in regional elections. Protesters gathered across Indonesia on August 22, 2024, to dispute what they see as an attempt by the current and incoming presidents to cement their familial power.
Operation Jericho: Suspects Connected to Drug and Money Laundering Ring in Panama Arrested
Panamanian police have arrested two suspects allegedly involved in a high-profile drug-trafficking and money-laundering ring formerly operating in Panama. One of the suspects arrested was Juan Manuel Aguilar Reyna, who had been on Panama's Most Wanted list, and the other suspect arrested is Abraham Rico Pineda, son of Congressman Raul Pineda. 29 people in total were allegedly a part of the ring that was brought down via Operation Jericho, and 7 key suspects are reportedly still at large.
Commercial Vessel in Red Sea Adrift After Likely Houthi Attack
A likely Houthi attack left the Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion without power and adrift in the Red Sea off the coast of the Yemeni port city of Hodeida. No casualties have been reported. Reports indicate the vessel was struck by three projectiles after being approached by two smaller craft, which onboard security members engaged with small arms fire. While no parties have claimed responsibility for the attack, it matches tactics commonly used by the Houthis. The group often takes multiple days to claim responsibility for individual incidents.
