Canada Government Orders Striking Rail Workers Back to Work Reducing Supply Chain Disruptions

On August 22, the federal government ordered striking workers from Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) back to work just one day after they went on strike over pay and working conditions. It will likely take days for service levels to return to normal, but the worst supply chain disruptions have likely been averted. Canada has North America's biggest rail network, run by CN and CPKC, and delivery issues would have been felt across the continent, especially for the agricultural sector.

Another German Military Base Raises Security Alert

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization Airbase (NATO) in Geilenkirchen raised its security level due to an unidentified threat. This is the latest incident involving threats against German military facilities and comes one week after a German military base was sealed off for several hours as authorities investigated suspected sabotage to the water supply. There was another trespassing incident in Geilenkirchen, and in April, two German-Russian men were arrested for plotting attacks on bases. The events are likely tied to Germany's support for Ukraine and the upcoming elections in eastern Germany, where opponents of continued German support for Ukraine are leading. Other suspected Russian-backed acts of sabotage have been taking place across Europe, likely tied to support for Ukraine and linked to elections or major events.

Hungary Limits Aid to Ukrainian Refugees

The Hungarian government issued a decree limiting aid for Ukrainian refugees. Under the new decree, only Ukrainians from regions that are directly affected by invading Russian troops can receive Hungarian assistance. The new measure highlights Hungary's position as one of the last remaining pro-Russian governments in Europe and underscores how its government continues to disrupt European unity towards Ukraine.
