After Attacks, Israel and Hezbollah Pivot Towards Talk of Containment

Both Israeli and Hezbollah spokespersons have indicated short-term containment of attacks after a barrage of strikes over the weekend. The Israeli military had launched what it termed preemptive attacks on thousands of Hezbollah’s rocket launcher barrels in southern Lebanon, involving about 100 Israeli Air Force planes attacking over 270 targets simultaneously. Hezbollah responded with rocket and drone strikes at northern Israel. Amid the tensions, several major European airlines decided to suspend flights to and from Tel Aviv and Beirut.

Indian Prime Minister Modi Visits Ukraine

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited Ukraine and participated in talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky. Modi's visit comes a month after he visited Russia, a longtime defense and economic partner to India. However, Modi's Russia visit drew sharp condemnation from both Ukraine and the West. India has long tried to cast itself as a senior geopolitical player on the world stage, and Modi's trip to Ukraine likely aims to both placate the West and demonstrate that India can conduct diplomacy with both sides of a major conflict.

Possible IS-Affiliated Attack in Volgograd, Russia

Russian security forces have regained control of a prison in Volgograd, Russia, where inmates—who identified themselves as Islamic State (IS) militants—staged a revolt and took several people hostage. The security forces were able to neutralize the assailants. As a result of the attackers’ operation, four prison employees lost their lives. The prisoners claimed their attack was in revenge for those detained during the IS Crocus City Hall attack in Moscow that took place earlier this year.
