Russia Launches Largest Airstrike on Ukraine To Date

On August 26, Russia launched its largest set of airstrikes on Ukraine throughout the course of the war, likely in response to Ukraine's invasion of Kursk. Russia fired over 200 missiles and drones, primarily targeting Ukrainian infrastructure, and hit fifteen different regions of the country. While Ukrainian officials said they managed to shoot down the majority of the Russian projectiles, the attack caused widespread power outages throughout both Ukraine and Moldova. The attacks also damaged the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant, however, authorities assured the dam was not at risk of a breach at this time.

Islamic State Claims Stabbing Attack that Killed Three in Solingen, Germany

The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for a stabbing attack in the western city of Solingen two days earlier. On August 24, the attacker handed himself in to police after killing three people and injuring at least four others ahead of a large three-day festival marking the founding of the city. The attacker is reportedly a Syrian immigrant, but his links to IS are likely tenuous. IS-inspired attackers are rarely captured alive or turn themselves into authorities. The attacker was more likely radicalized online. European authorities have been warning for months of an increased terror threat from lone-actor individuals inspired by groups like IS and Israel's war with Hamas. A warning for this sort of attack was issued before the 2023 holiday season, and German authorities issued another warning ahead of the European Championships football tournament in June. While IS welcomes these sorts of lone-actor attacks, they are unlikely to plan major orchestrated attacks across Europe. In its claim of responsibility, IS claims the attacker in Solingen was inspired by Israel's war with Hamas. The attack could also impact elections in three east German states in September 2024, where opposition to immigration is a key issue.

Wave of Attacks from Increasingly Violent Separatist Region in Balochistan, Pakistan

There were at least a dozen attacks across the southeastern Balochistan province on August 26, 2024. Most of the attacks targeted security forces, where at least 40 people were killed in addition to the 21 alleged attackers. Violence has been worsening in the separatist province in recent years as they have adopted their tactics to become more deadly, including the use of suicide bombers and women in their attacks. While the attacks remain in the province, there is a risk they could expand to other parts of Pakistan. There is also a risk that the violence will spread to Iran. Pakistani separatists reportedly operate in Iran and have been targeted by Pakistan in the recent past. A similar set of Iranian separatist groups operates in Balochistan, and both sides accuse the other of harboring terrorists.
