Chinese President Xi Jinping Announces USD 51 Billion in Investment Plans Across Africa amid Summit
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced plans to invest nearly USD 51 billion in loans and private investment across the African continent over the next three years at the China-Africa cooperation summit in Beijing. The major investment plan spans over 30 projects aimed at improving trade access between Africa and China, including in clean and nuclear energy, loans, private investment, military aid, and other infrastructure projects. President Jinping stated that the projects would result in the creation of over 1 million jobs for residents on the continent, and that China intended to eliminate tariffs for 33 countries in Africa. The move is a part of China's larger Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which includes modernizing Africa's infrastructure to improve investment opportunities throughout Africa. One major project includes Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway that connects the capital Nairobi to the port of Mombasa; however, the second phase of the railway has yet to be completed due to Kenya's outstanding debts to China. The BRI has also expanded port facilities, mining operations, railways, and many other infrastructure projects in Africa.
Kenya Boarding School Dormitory Catches on Fire
A boarding school in central Kenya caught on fire, which, at the time of reporting, claimed 17 lives and left 14 injured. Investigations are yet to determine the cause of the fire but the spread of fire has been attributed to the fact that the building was made of timber. In the past, several Kenyan schools have witnessed fires break out, which have usually been caused by arson.
U.S. Accuses Russia of Interfering in 2024 Presidential Elections
The United States, recently, accused Russia of using disinformation networks to interfere in the 2024 presidential elections. In an unsealed indictment, the US Department of Justice accused Russian operatives of funding Tenet Media as part of a Kremlin-sponsored influence campaign. Tenet is a platform for independent content creators that has millions of followers. Additionally, the Federal Bureau of Investigation seized 32 web domains utilized by the Doppelgänger Russian-linked influence operation network. Russia has used the Doppelgänger network for several years to promote disinformation across Facebook and other social media platforms. The network has evolved several times over the years to evade authorities.
