Opposition Leader Flees for Spain as Maduro Solidifies Hold on Power

Opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia was granted political asylum in Spain after leaving Venezuela. Gonzalez was the opposition presidential candidate that most of the international community believes won the July 28 presidential elections in Venezuela. However, President Nicols Maduro was declared the winner and has since launched charges against Gonzalez and his allies. Venezuelan forces had besieged the Argentine embassy on suspicion they were providing Gonzalez asylum but have since lifted the siege, despite Argentina hosting several other opposition figures. While Spain has granted Gonzalez amnesty, they are not recognizing him as president, and he is unlikely to act as the leader of a government in exile. Gonzalez owes most of his popularity to Maria Corina Machado, whom Gonzalez replaced as the opposition's presidential candidate after she was banned. Machado remains in Venezuela and will likely try to manage the opposition domestically. However, Maduro's hold on power is strong, with few signs the judiciary or military are willing to support Machado. Furthermore, international support for Machado is relatively muted, with the United States unlikely to pressure Maduro via economic sanctions or a possible military response that could lead to mass migration and a spike in energy prices.

Iran Supplies Russia With Ballistic Missiles

Iran reportedly sent about 200 ballistic missiles to Russia. This weapons transfer marks a significant escalation of Iran's military support for Russia. Ballistic missiles are typically more difficult to shoot down than drones; the additional Iranian missiles will likely replenish Russian waning arsenal and allow Russia to continue targeted attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.

Vehicles Plunge into River as Super Typhoon Destroys Vietnam Bridge

Super Typhoon Yagi destroyed a busy bridge in Vietnam, causing several vehicles to plummet into the Red River. Rescue missions are underway as the military has been deployed to patch up the bridge to limit further casualties. At least three people have been rescued so far, while searches reportedly continue for 13 people. The super typhoon, now calming down to a tropical depression, has claimed, at the time of writing, 60 lives and left more than 240 injured since it made landfall last week. The typhoon is expected to create further disruptions as it progresses westward.
