Ruling Party in Brandenburg Narrowly Wins Re-Election Despite Surge in Support for Anti-Immigrant Parties

The ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Chancellor Olaf Scholz narrowly won re-election in the eastern state of Brandenburg. However, for the third east German state election in a row, the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party performed well. The success of AfD demonstrates the weakness of the SPD nationally and emphasizes voter anger towards German immigration policy and for German support for Ukraine, which voters blame for the high cost of living. Further, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), a new party also focused on limiting immigration and educating support for Ukraine, came in the third place. While the AfD is very unlikely to perform at this level nationally, the key campaign issues will likely resonate at the general elections a year from now, where the AfD will likely win more seats but still remain in opposition.

Israel Warns Lebanese Civilians of Expanded Airstrikes

During afternoon hours local time on September 23, 2024, Israeli military officials stated that "we are preparing for a large-scale and targeted strike in Bekaa Valley" and that Lebanese civilians in the area have “two hours” to evacuate homes being used to store Hezbollah arms. This warning comes amid a serious escalation in Israeli strikes against the militant group over the last several days. At the time of writing, Israel’s airstrikes on several areas in southern Lebanon have claimed close to 500 lives. It is reported that Israel will begin to shift its focus on North Lebanon to target Hezbollah as it has been a part of the crossfire launching rockets in support of Hamas.

New Zealand Pilot Freed After 19 Months of Captivity in Indonesia

A New Zealand pilot who was kidnapped by rebels in West Papua, Indonesia, in February of 2023, was finally freed on September 21, 2024. Philip Mehrtens was captured by the West Papua National Liberation Army after landing a plane in their claimed territory, and held with demands that New Zealand endorse the independence of West Papua from Indonesia. Long negotiations with the separatist group finally resulted in his release without those conditions being fulfilled.
