Haiti Strengthens Security at Port Following Kidnapping of Foreign Sailors
The Haitian government has announced it will prioritize strengthening security at the Port-au-Prince port, with a combined effort from the Haitian police and military, besides foreign troops, as part of the Multinational Mission for Security Support (MMSS). This focus on port security was announced in response to an incident on September 10, 2024, where two Filipino sailors were kidnapped by criminal elements. Meanwhile, the Bahamas government has announced its intentions to join the Multinational Mission for Security Support (MMSS) in Haiti. As a part of this accession, it will deploy 150 troops to Haiti. The security forces from the Bahamas will join the 600 Kenyan troops, the bulk of the MMSS. Jamaica and Belize have also recently pledged troops to the MMSS, adding 24 Jamaican and two Belizean officers.
Algeria Imposes Visa Restrictions for Moroccan Citizens
Algeria has imposed visa restrictions for Moroccan citizens after accusing Morocco of permitting criminal activity within the country's borders, such as pro-Israeli espionage as well as human and drug trafficking. Moroccans must now obtain a visa to enter Algeria. Morocco and Algeria have had a historically tense relationship over several issues, including border disputes and the independence status of the Western Sahara, which Morocco considers to be its territory. More recently, Algeria ended diplomatic ties with Morocco in 2021 in response to the government's decision to allegedly support militia groups near their shared border and to normalize ties with Israel.
Israel Expands Airstrikes to Yemen
Israel has intensified its military campaign against some of the regional allies of Iran by launching airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, in response to recent Houthi missile attacks. The escalation follows the killing of Hezbollah’s leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, on Friday amid escalating tensions in Lebanon. Israeli strikes on Hezbollah have resulted in over 1,000 Lebanese deaths and almost 6,000 injuries, with Hezbollah and Houthi forces retaliating with rocket fire.
