Death Toll in Lebanon Surpasses 1,000 as Israeli Special Forces Probe Hezbollah Tunnels

The imminent Israeli ground incursion of Lebanon seemed to be starting early Tuesday. The Israeli military announced that it has initiated "limited, localized, and targeted ground raids based on precise intelligence" against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon villages near the border, which it claims pose an immediate threat to Israeli communities in northern Israel. To support the ground operations, the air force and artillery are conducting "precise strikes." Local health officials indicated that more than 1,000 people have been killed and at least 6,000 wounded in the past two weeks of Israeli bombardments across Lebanon.

Taiwan Cancels School and Flights Ahead of Super Typhoon Krathon

On September 30, Taiwan announced school and office closures in Eastern and Southern Taiwan as Super Typhoon Krathon is expected to land on October 1. The storm is moving west-to-north westerly, bringing hefty rain to the region until October 2. Several airlines have canceled or rescheduled domestic and international flights. In addition, ferry routes are also closed, and travel disruptions will continue for the next few days. Krathon previously hit the Philippines, leading to class and work cancellations.

Opposition Party Sets Chairs on Fire Outside Parliament in Albania

On September 30, 2024, the Albanian opposition party set fire to a pile of wooden chairs outside parliament in protest of the imprisonment of their colleague, Ervin Salianji. At the start of the parliamentary session, opposition members carried chairs from the chamber and set them ablaze on the building's steps. However, security quickly extinguished the fire. Salianji, a member of the Democratic Party, was sentenced to a one-year prison term for making a "false report" against the former interior minister, a charge Salianji denies.
