Iran Launches Mass Missile Strike Against Israel
Security sources stated that Iran launched many rockets, including over 180 ballistic missiles, towards Israel during evening hours local time on October 1, 2024. The Israeli military confirmed that all civilians in the area were moved to bomb shelters following missile strikes from Iran. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack, stating that Iran "made a big mistake" and would face consequences. While many missiles were intercepted—some reportedly by U.S. defense systems—at least one struck a building on George Weiss Street in north Tel Aviv. In retaliation, Israel launched multiple airstrikes on southern Beirut, igniting fires in several locations.
Several Rockets Launched near United States Base in Baghdad
Several media outlets indicated that at least three rockets were fired in the area of Baghdad International Airport (BGW), near a U.S. military base, during evening hours local time on September 30, 2024. However, there were conflicting reports regarding the exact target of the attack, with at least one source saying it was instead directed against the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Complex, a U.S. State Department facility. Regardless, only slight damage occurred due to the attack, and no casualties reported. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but it was likely carried out by Iran-backed militias, who may face retaliatory strikes in the coming days.
Legislators Move to Impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Kenya
On October 1, 2024, legislators filed a motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua amid growing tensions between the vice president and President William Ruto's administration. Approximately 83 percent of lawmakers passed the motion in the National Assembly to begin impeachment proceedings against the deputy president. If the motion passes, then officials will launch an impeachment investigation against him. The motion is widely anticipated to pass. The move comes after Ruto's administration accused Deputy President Gachagua of inciting violence during demonstrations and of attempting to undermine the government, while Gachagua denied the accusations and claimed that Ruto was increasingly excluding him from the government.
