ZeroFox Intelligence Brief: Physical Threats to the U.S. Elections

There is an elevated risk of political violence related to the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential elections. Prior to the first assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, the most substantial threats came from those concerned with the integrity of U.S. elections. Currently observed threats stem from an uptick in politically motivated violence, including physical attacks and death threats that have targeted political candidates, their supporters, government officials, and polling locations since the 2020 election. Passionate opinions related to campaign issues like immigration, wars in Ukraine and Gaza, LGBTQ+ rights, and access to abortion could also lead to violence. The primary risk locations are battleground states and areas where elections were closely contested in 2020.

Beirut Strikes Reportedly Target Potential Hezbollah Leader; 18 Killed in Israeli Strike on West Bank

Israel conducted a new series of airstrikes on Beirut, with observers noting that the intensity was greater than the attack that resulted in the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah about a week ago. Reports indicate that one of the intended targets in the southern district of Dahiyeh was Hashem Safieddine, who is seen as a potential successor to Nasrallah. At least 18 individuals were reported dead in a refugee camp in the West Bank following an airstrike attributed to the Israeli military. The Israeli military claimed the strike killed a Hamas leader, Zahi Yaser Abd al-Razeq Oufi, whom they accused of being involved in prior attacks and allegedly planning another. The Israeli army stated that the strike in the Tulkarm area of northern West Bank was a coordinated operation conducted by the Shin Bet internal security service and the air force. In a separate incident, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly targeted a weapons depot close to the Syrian port city of Latakia. Meanwhile, a key road connecting Lebanon with Syria is reported hit by an Israeli strike. In a recent X post, an Israeli military spokesperson has warned residents of 20 villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate their homes without delay.

U.S. Sets New Tariffs on Solar Imports from Southeast Asia

The U.S. Commerce Department announced anti-subsidy duties on solar cells imported by companies in Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Thailand after finding they benefited from unfair government aid. The announcement was a result of a trade case brought by American companies that accused Chinese companies of building factories in the above-mentioned four Southeast Asian countries and then flooding the U.S. market with cheap solar panels priced below their cost of production and receiving unfair subsidies that make American products uncompetitive. China is likely building factories outside of China, hoping to evade previous sanctions imposed by the United States against Chinese-produced panels.
