Executive Summary

October 7, 2024, marks the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ attack on Israel, wherein thousands of Palestinian militants breached the Gaza-Israel border in an unprecedented attack that resulted in the deaths of 1,180 Israelis and foreign nationals.

In the weeks running up to this date, Israel has used years of successful intelligence-gathering to severely weaken Hezbollah, Israel’s longtime nemesis who entered the conflict to support Hamas. Specifically, this allowed for the high-profile, booby-trapped communication device attacks and precision airstrikes that wiped out the group’s leadership and degraded its weapons supplies. Israel also largely foiled Iran’s second direct missile attack on the county. These accomplishments are in stark contrast to the military and intelligence failures of a year earlier that allowed for Hamas’ deadly rampage and widespread public frustration over the government’s failure to secure the release of the hostages held in the Gaza Strip. Moreover, despite the recent improvements, Israel still faces a multi-front conflict against Hamas in Gaza, a ground war in Lebanon, and conflicts with other regional Iran-backed proxies, who are likely to utilize a range of asymmetric tactics on the battlefield and in cyberspace to ensure Tehran does not lose its malign influence in the region.
