Haitian Government Denounces Mass Deportation Strategy of Dominican Republic

On October 9, 2024, the Haitian government denounced the recently announced plans by the Dominican Republic to organize mass deportation of Haitian migrants. According to the Dominican Republic, they intend to deport up to 10,000 Haitian migrants a week, and as part of the announced strategy had deported 2,000 Haitians in the timeframe between Oct 1-6, 2024. Haitian government officials and activists have condemned the roundups and mass deportation, and have raised concerns that increased deportations by the Dominican Republic could result in an increased number of Haitian migrants attempting to reach the United States.

Protesters Clash with Police and Counter-Protesters in Argentina After Lawmakers Fail to Overturn Veto of University Funding

On October 9, 2024, protesters clashed with police outside the National Congress of Argentina after it was announced that Argentine lawmakers had failed to overturn president Javier Milei's veto of university funding. In September, 2024, Argentine president Milei vetoed a proposal to increase university funding to match with the country's triple digit inflation. The president's veto was controversial, and the Argentine political opposition pressed for the legislature to overturn it. However, the opposition lacked the numbers to attain the two-thirds majority needed to overturn a presidential veto. Following the announcement of the veto's sustainment, protesters who were already demonstrating against the veto became violent and clashed with police, resulting in multiple arrests.

China Retaliates to EV Tariffs with Anti-Dumping Rules on Brandy Imports

On October 8, 2024, China’s Commerce Ministry reversed an earlier decision to cancel tariffs on brandy imported from the European Union (EU) despite finding it had been sold in China below market prices. Instead, China announced anti-dumping tariffs, and from October 11, 2024, importers will have to provide a security deposit to Chinese customs when importing relevant brandies originating in the EU. China’s anti-dumping measures came days after the EU announced hefty tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs). Most imported brandy comes from France, and France was one of the EU states that supported the EV tariffs. Further strategic EU products are likely to be targeted in the near future.
