Hurricane Milton Causes Widespread Damages and Claims Casualties
Florida is grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, which made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane and cut through the state as a Category 1 storm before moving offshore. The storm caused over a dozen deaths and dropped over 18 inches of rain, marking a 1-in-1000-year rainfall event. More than 2.6 million people are still without power due to Milton, the third hurricane to hit Florida this year. The storm also created fatal "supercharged" tornadoes, with at least nine tornadoes tearing through communities in one county overnight. On October 9, 2024, Mexican media and government reported that recent hurricanes had caused severe damage in multiple regions of Mexico, particularly the Yucatan and Acapulco. The ports Celestún, Sisal and Progreso in the Yucatan were particularly affected by the flooding and destruction of infrastructure from Hurricane Milton.
Attack on Israeli Entity in Gothenburg, Sweden
In yet another attack targeting an Israeli entity in Europe, gunmen opened fire on an office of Israeli military technology firm Elbit Systems. In early October, gunmen also opened fire on the Israel embassy in Stockholm, while Swedish nationals were reportedly arrested after throwing grenades near the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen. The activities are likely inspired by the Israel-Hamas war. Meanwhile, in Beirut, Israeli strikes killed 22 and injured over 100 as a senior Hezbollah official evaded an Israeli assassination attempt, according to Lebanese authorities.
Commercial Vessel Struck by Projectile in the Red Sea
On October 10, 2024, a Liberian-flagged commercial vessel near the East African coast in the Red Sea was struck by a projectile, receiving minor damage. No casualties were reported. Two more projectiles later fell in the water around the vessel. Yemeni Houthi militia did not immediately claim credit for the attack, even though the group has frequently targeted vessels in the area over the past year.
