North Korea Blows Up Parts of Inter-Korean Roads

On October 15, 2024, North Korea blew up the northern sections of two inter-Korean roads to emphasize its severing of all ties with South Korea. North Korea exploded parts of the Gyeongui and Donghae roads on its northern side of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL). Gyeongui Road links the two Koreas in the western part of the country and is primarily used by business people operating factories at the Kaesong Industrial Complex in North Korea. Meanwhile, Donghae Road along the east coast is utilized by tourists visiting North Korea's Mount Geumgang. While North and South Korean ties have been tense for decades, 2024 has seen North Korea abandon the policy of ultimately reuniting. South Korea is likely to respond to North Korea's repeated physical and political demonstrations by stationing more troops near the border and through military exercises near the border.

Tight Security Cordon During Meeting of EU and GCC Leaders in Brussels

From October 16 to 18, 2024, European Union (EU) leaders will host a key meeting in the Belgian capital of Brussels. Leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will also be in attendance on October 16. Because of the presence of major world leaders, expect transportation disruptions and tightened security restrictions in central Brussels. This will include bus lane closures and metro restrictions at Shuman station. ID checks will also be required to access certain areas of the city.

U.S. President Biden to Visit Germany to Discuss Aid to Ukraine

On October 18, 2024, U.S. President Joe Biden will make an official visit to Germany after his previous trip on October 10 was canceled. President Biden's visit will be scaled down but will likely include further military and financial aid for Ukraine. Expect heightened security in the capital, Berlin. The visit could also inspire Russian hybrid war tactics to demoralize western support for Ukraine. Russia has been accused of staging acts of sabotage in European states designed to weaken support for Ukraine. This has included assassinations, attacks on critical infrastructure, and physical attacks on politicians or high-profile supporters of Ukraine.
