U.S. and Canadian Warships Sail Through the Taiwan Strait
U.S. and Canadian warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait just one week after China held massive war games around Taiwan, which China claims as its territory. The two vessels, identified as the USS Higgins and the Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigate HMCS Vancouver, sailed north through the strait. Germany also sent two warships transiting the Taiwan Strait a month ago to increase its defense engagements in the Asia-Pacific region. China claimed the U.S. and the Canadian voyages threatened peace.
Terror Attack in Kashmir, India, Kills At Least Seven
Gunmen affiliated with the militant group Resistance Front (RF) have killed at least seven people and injured several others at a construction site in Indian-administered Kashmir. The attack came only days after the swearing-in of a new government in the Jammu and Kashmir union territory. Militant attacks in the territory have increased this year, though the majority have targeted Indian government workers or military personnel.
Ceasefire Breaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo
The latest ceasefire between the M23 rebels, supported by Rwanda, and the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, broke on October 20, 2024, as rebels took the town of Kalembe. The two sides had refrained from violence since August. The resumption of violence is likely due to M23's need for more funds (which can be secured via taking over mining operations in the mineral-rich region) and a desire to improve the group's negotiating position during upcoming peace talks in Angola.
