Iran Vows Response After Israeli Airstrikes Hit Military Targets
Israel launched airstrikes on military targets in Iran early Saturday (local time), claiming retaliation for Iran's October 1 missile attack. The strikes, focusing on missile production and air defense systems, caused explosions in Tehran and nearby provinces. Iran reported limited damage and vowed a "proportional reaction." Israel warned against further escalation, while the United States has advised restraint. Regional tensions have heightened amid ongoing conflicts involving Hamas and Hezbollah.
President Putin Comments on Presence of North Korean Troops in Russia
On October 24, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time commented on reports that North Korean soldiers are deployed in Russia. In response to a question from a journalist who asked about satellite imagery showing North Korean troops in Russia, Putin seemingly confirmed their presence saying "this is our business." Putin then noted that according to the recent military treaty between Russia and North Korea, if one of the states finds itself in a state of war, the other would immediately provide military assistance. While Putin did not comment on their objective, it is widely expected Russia will use the North Korean troops to repel Ukrainian forces from Russia's Kursk region. Indeed, Ukrainian intelligence reported it observed a number of North Korean troops in Kursk on October 23.
Fighting Breaks Out Between Peñarol and Botafogo Fans in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Fans of the Brazilian football teams Peñarol and Botafogo recently fought each other in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The clashing fans reportedly used sticks, stones, and bottles as improvised weapons during the fight, and were ultimately broken up by police who deployed stun grenades. The fight took place hours before the scheduled match, part of the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores.
