Chinese Insurer Halts Insurance of Exports to Russia

China's state-funded insurance company that provides insurance for international trade, Sinosure, has reportedly halted insurance coverage for exports to Russia. Many Russian companies have reported Sinosure has begun to act similarly to Chinese banks, and is refusing to insure the export of goods to Russian entities on the Bank of China's blacklist.

Australia Social Media Ban for Under-16s Proposed

Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced plans for a ban on social media for Australians under the age of 16 on November 7, 2024. The proposed ban will be translated into legislation and voted on this year. If successful, it would come into force a year later (roughly December 2025). This ban would be one of the strictest in the world, setting a high age for access and not providing an exception in the event of parental permission to access these sites.

Biden Administration to Rush Aid to Ukraine

According to recent media reports, the Biden administration is planning to rush the remaining USD 6 billion authorized for Ukraine before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office. This decision comes as the Biden administration, and European leaders, are concerned Trump will significantly reduce aid to Ukraine. Of the USD 61 billion aid package passed by Congress in April, USD 4.3 billion remains to send existing weapons stock to Ukraine and USD 2.1 billion remains to contract weapons with U.S. defense companies. The Biden administration will be hard-pressed to utilize the remaining USD 6 billion before Trump's inauguration, however, as weapons shipments often take several months to complete. Many questions remain about how Trump will approach Russia's war in Ukraine. The future Trump administration can be expected to reduce assistance to Ukraine, but specific policies towards Ukraine remain unclear. On the campaign trail Trump promised to end the conflict "on day one", but did not offer any details on how he planned to do so. Many of Trump's other campaign statements about Ukraine suggest he will likely decrease the United States’ assistance to Ukraine, but again provided little detail.
