Kenya President William Ruto Announces Cancellation of Adani Infrastructure Deals

Kenyan President William Ruto has announced the cancellation of multimillion-dollar deals with India-based Adani Group to expand Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) and invest in Kenya's energy industries. The deal would have allowed Adani to control Kenya's main airport in Nairobi for 30 years in exchange for investing in the airport, including the erection of a new airport terminal and runway. The deal sparked protests and a strike at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and was initiated by airport workers as they claimed the deal would result in layoffs among airport employees. The announcement comes after Gautam Adani, the owner of Adani, was indicted in India for allegedly bribing Indian officials about USD 265 million.

China Expands Scope of Anti-Subsidy Probe into EU Dairy Imports

China’s Ministry of Commerce said it would widen the scope of its anti-subsidy investigation into dairy imports from the European Union (EU) to cover additional EU subsidy programs and those in Denmark, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. China initiated its dairy investigation in August 2024, targeting liquid milk, cream, and cheese from the EU, and decided to expand the investigation as new EU tariffs of up to 45.3 percent on Chinese electric vehicle (EV) imports took effect on October 30, 2024. China is likely using the additional dairy investigation to retaliate against EU EV tariff hikes. China’s customs data shows the EU is China’s second-largest source of dairy products behind only New Zealand. China also has ongoing anti-dumping investigations into EU brandy and pork.

Japan Approves USD 142 Billion Stimulus Plan

The Japanese government is pushing forward with economic measures such as providing subsidies of 30,000 yen per household to low-income households to cope with inflation and boost economic growth. Additionally, the Japanese government will be providing subsidies to reduce utility bills and gasoline prices. With recent discussions that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates again at its December meeting as an effort to strengthen the economy and concerns over the depreciating Yen prompt policymakers to act, the government pushed a stimulus package. Japan continues to battle the weakening Yen and the public's voicing concerns. With recent backlash for government officials, public leaders are working to support citizens and are under pressure to regain the trust of affiliated political parties.
