U.S. Intelligence Sees Low Nuclear Threat from Russia but Warns of Sabotage Risks
U.S. intelligence assesses that a nuclear attack by Russia remains unlikely, despite President Vladimir Putin's escalating rhetoric and recent changes to Russia's nuclear doctrine. Analysts believe nuclear strikes offer no clear military advantage and view sabotage and cyberattacks as more likely Russian responses. The decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S. weapons deeper into Russia followed concerns over North Korea supplying troops to Moscow, prompting Washington to bolster Kyiv’s capabilities. While fears of nuclear escalation have eased, officials warn of heightened risks from Russia’s covert retaliation tactics, including sabotage in Europe and expanded "gray-zone" warfare targeting Western nations.
Israel’s Netanyahu Cabinet Agrees to Ceasefire in Lebanon
The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon began on November 26 with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announcing that his security cabinet agreed to a 60-day ceasefire in Lebanon. The agreement will reportedly see the Israeli military withdraw its ground troops from Lebanon over a two-month period as the Lebanese Army gradually deploys its forces to the south. For its part, Hezbollah must withdraw its fighters and military equipment to the north of the Litani River. The area between the river and the Israeli border will be patrolled by a combination of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) troops and Lebanese Army forces. Moments before a ceasefire took effect, air strikes were reported in Beirut amid continued cross-border hostilities. Hezbollah claimed to have launched drones at Israel on Tuesday; while Israel conducted extensive air strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs following evacuation orders in the area. Additionally, outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden announced efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and measures to end the conflict without Hamas in power.
U.S. Accuses Indian Billionaire Gautam Adani of Bribery
U.S. prosecutors charged Indian billionaire Gautam Adani with bribery in a scheme to defraud U.S. investors. Adani, India’s second-richest man, runs the global conglomerate Adani Group, with investments in everything from ports to the electrical grid. According to the allegations, Adani and seven other defendants bribed Indian government officials with more than USD 250 million to win solar energy contracts, then concealed the plan as they attempted to raise money from U.S. investors. U.S. law allows prosecutors to pursue foreign corruption charges if they allegedly involve links to U.S. investors or markets. The Adani Group claims it violated no laws. Additionally, Kenyan President William Ruto has announced the cancellation of multimillion-dollar deals with India-based Adani Group to expand Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) and invest in Kenya's energy industries.
