ZeroFox Intelligence December 2024 Geopolitical Brief
ZeroFox’s monthly Geopolitical Brief offers a rundown of geopolitical events. Israel’s decision to accept a 60-day ceasefire in Lebanon significantly lowers the risk of a broader regional war. Germany is likely headed for snap elections in February 2025 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s ruling three-party coalition collapsed. Renewed farmers’ protests in France aim to derail a European Union (EU) trade agreement with Latin America. Farmers are concerned the treaty will flood European markets with cheaper agricultural products from Latin America, undercutting their prices. Indonesia is requiring Apple to commit to major local investments before it will allow iPhones to be sold in the lucrative market of over 200 million consumers.
Russia Attacks Ukraine with Missiles—Takes Down Power Grid
Russian drones reportedly caused widespread damage to some parts of Ukraine–Kyiv and the southern Odessa region—injuring at least eight people. Russia reportedly sent around 90 long-range missiles, targeting Ukraine’s power grid, leaving one million affected, 79 of which were shot down by Ukraine's air force.
Georgia Demonstrators Clash with Police After EU Membership Talks Suspended
In Tbilisi, Georgia, police clashed with demonstrators following the government's decision to halt discussions on joining the European Union (EU) until 2028. The unrest was sparked by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's comments accusing the EU of "blackmail" and announcing the suspension of Georgia's EU membership efforts for the next four years. The Interior Ministry reported 43 arrests and three police officers injured, two of whom required hospitalization. Authorities used water cannons, pepper spray, and teargas to control the crowds amid attempts to break into the parliament building. Tensions escalated when orders to disperse were not followed, prompting a large number of arrests.
