International Organization Backs USD 500 Million Environmental Investment Program in Ethiopia

On December 4, 2024, environmental organization Climate Investment Funds (CIF) announced plans to back a USD 500 million investment program in Ethiopia to restore land, foster food security, and protect land. CIF officials stated that they will contribute USD 37 million to the program and will help with garnering an additional USD 492 million from other international organizations, including the World Bank and African Development Bank (AfDB). The program is aimed at restoring potential coffee farmland in the Amhara, Oromia, South Ethiopia, and Somali regions. The CIF claimed that Ethiopia is experiencing mass desertification and that the program is aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change.

South Korean Public Responds Against Martial Law, Mass Rallies Around the Country Triggered

South Korean media outlets are reporting mass rallies with thousands of participants responding against President Yoon Seok Yeol’s actions on December 3 initiating martial law. Major contributors to the rallies are the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), civic groups including People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD), and major labor unions. The groups initiated candlelight vigils in urban areas of Gyeongsang Province, including Busan, Daegu, and Gyeongnam. Historically, major rallies were held around City Hall of each city. Attendees are demanding President Yoon to step down immediately and for the National Assembly to proceed with his impeachment.

Nationwide Demonstration in India against Bangladesh Detainment of Hindu Leader

On December 4, 2024, demonstrations in numerous Indian cities took place to denounce Bangladesh’s arrest of a local Hindu leader. The demonstrations were primarily concentrated in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, with the state capital Indore reportedly hosting thousands of participants. Reports indicate that limited demonstrations also took place in other cities, including the cities of Bengaluru and Mumbai.
