Rebel Forces Capture Hama, Syria, on December 5 in a Major Blow to Government

On December 5, 2024, Syrian government forces confirmed their withdrawal from the city of Hama after days of resisting a rebel push from the north, part of a larger rebel offensive that has quickly captured much of the country’s northwest. A major center of anti-government sentiment early in Syria’s 13-year civil war, Hama nonetheless remained in government hands for the duration of the conflict. Its fall is a major blow to government forces that have struggled to resist the surprise rebel offensive launched in late November. Rebel forces led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham are pledging to continue their push farther south, likely targeting the city of Homs. The capture of Homs would also set up rebel forces to continue their advance toward the national capital, Damascus.

Russia Removes Requirement for International Gas Transactions to Be Paid Through Gazprombank

On December 5, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree to remove the requirement that international payments for Russian gas be routed through Gazprombank. This order amends a previous decree, signed on March 31, 2022, that established Gazprombank as Russia's authorized bank for gas payments from type "K" foreign accounts. Putin's policy reversal comes after the United States imposed sanctions on Gazprombank on November 21, jeopardizing international energy payments.

Romanian Constitutional Court Validates First Round of Presidential Race After Vote Recount

Romania's Constitutional Court has validated the first-round results of the presidential election, confirming candidate Călin Georgescu's lead. This decision followed a comprehensive recount initiated due to allegations of electoral fraud and concerns over foreign interference, particularly from Russia. The recount reaffirmed the initial outcomes, setting the stage for a runoff between Georgescu and reformist Elena Lasconi on December 8.
