Deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Arrives in Russia After Rebels Claim Power
After the rebel offensive—led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham—successfully stormed the Syrian capital on Sunday and claimed power, deposed President Bashar al-Assad and his family arrived in Russia, where they have reportedly been granted asylum on humanitarian grounds. The United Nations Security Council is poised to convene on December 9 for an emergency closed-door conference to address the Syrian situation. Meanwhile, the rebels opened the doors of the Assad regime’s prisons, where hundreds and thousands of individuals had disappeared during nearly 14 years of the civil war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he had ordered the military to take over a demilitarised buffer zone on the border with Syria. On the other hand, the Pentagon has stated that the United States will maintain its presence in eastern Syria to prevent any possibilities of the Islamic State’s revival.
South Korean President Impeachment Bill Fails to Pass amid Widespread Vigils
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol narrowly avoided impeachment after his controversial martial law declaration elicited a nationwide response. A parliamentary vote fell five votes short, with many ruling party members of parliament boycotting. Yoon apologized, citing desperation, and promised no repeat of such actions. His martial law decree, overturned by parliament within hours, sparked widespread demonstrations and calls for his resignation, deepening political turmoil.
Netherlands to Impose Border Restrictions
Starting December 9, the Netherlands will institute border restrictions for at least six months to limit migration, including restrictions on certain flights. The Netherlands is the latest country to institute border checks between EU states. However, the Netherlands border stations will largely be unmanned due to staffing shortages. It could lead to supply chain delays for deliveries going into and out of the country, especially for goods transported by road.
