SIS Presents Report on Russian Interference in Moldova October Elections

Director of the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) Alexandru Musteața has presented a report to the Moldovan parliament on Russian interference in Moldova's October presidential elections and constitutional referendum. According to the report, Russia created a command center in Moscow under the control of fugitive Moldovan oligarch Illan Shor to coordinate interference in the key votes. The declassified report details how Russia provided Shor with financial, logistical, and technical resources to support the effort.

Georgian Opposition Denies Legitimacy of Upcoming Presidential Election

On December 14, 2024, Georgia is set to hold presidential elections. However, the opposition announced on December 12 that it does not recognize the upcoming election as legitimate. In a statement, the opposition, Coalition for Change, reiterated its call for new parliamentary elections and insisted current President Salome Zourabichvili is the "only legitimate representative of Georgia." This announcement will set another showdown between the opposition and the ruling Georgian Dream party, deepening Georgia's current political crisis. A delegation of European Union officials visiting Georgia met with President Zourabichvili on December 12 and reaffirmed her legitimacy as president of the country. The delegation also joined demonstrators in Tbilisi and expressed solidarity with Georgians who desire deeper ties with the EU.

Syrian Interim Government Announced

Syria’s authorities announced the lineup of the new transitional government charged with restoring security and services to the country recovering from over a decade of civil war. Among the named ministers were those in charge of the interior, justice, economy, media, agriculture, health, religious endowments, and education. Interim Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir stated that the new government is ready and willing to begin rebuilding but faces a funding shortage because the treasury of the former government was depleted by years of war, corruption, and international sanctions. The interim government plans to implement a series of free market economic reforms to reduce the strong centralization present under the Assad government.
