Law Enforcement Operation Shuts DDoS Booters Ahead of Christmas
What happened: A global law enforcement (LE) operation, PowerOFF, has seized 27 of the most popular platforms worldwide, disrupting a holiday tradition for cybercriminals of launching Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks to take websites offline.
Why it matters: The operation targeted two websites “booter” and “stresser” websites, which enabled cybercriminals and hacktivists to flood targets with illegal traffic, rendering websites and other web-based services inaccessible. The festive season has long been a peak period for hackers to carry out some of their most disruptive DDoS attacks, causing severe financial loss, reputational damage, and operational chaos for their victims. The motivations for launching such attacks vary, from economic sabotage and financial gain to ideological reasons, as demonstrated by notorious hacktivist collectives such as Killnet or Anonymous Sudan.
Scottish Parliament TV Vulnerable to Deepfakes
What happened: Researchers warn that deepfakes pose cybersecurity risks to Scottish Parliamentary live streams and archived recordings, potentially undermining public trust. Threats include hijacking live streams, creating manipulated videos for social media, and using archives to train artificial intelligence (AI) for malicious purposes.
Why it matters: Deepfake threats to the Scottish Parliament can likely endanger democratic processes through the spread of manipulated content and misinformation, misleading the public and amplifying false narratives. Without safeguards, archives could be exploited to enhance AI tools for targeted malicious campaigns against Parliament members. The Scottish Parliament reportedly lacks measures to prevent such attacks, but solutions like authentication checks and reporting plans will likely better safeguard the individual identities and privacy.
Europol and Co. Investigates Phone Phishing Gang
What happened: An international operation, involving Europol, against a phone phishing gang has led to the arrest of eight suspects. Law enforcement also carried out 17 searches in different locations in Belgium and the Netherlands. Besides committing large-scale phishing campaigns and trying to gain access to financial data by phone or online, the suspects also impersonated the police and banking staff and approached older victims at their doors.
Why it matters: Authorities believe that the victims are based in at least 10 European countries and that the economic damages amount to several millions of euros. The operation, which began in 2022, targeted an organized crime group conducting large-scale phishing campaigns across Europe, impersonating police and bank staff to defraud victims. Authorities issued warnings urging citizens to verify urgent account-related messages, avoid suspicious links, and use up-to-date security measures to counter phishing attempts.
