Turkiye Announces Development Package for Kurdish Areas amid PKK Ceasefire Talks

Turkiye has announced a new development package for its Kurdish-majority southeast worth USD 14 billion amid ceasefire talks with the leader of a Kurdish militant group. Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), recently signaled an apparent willingness to end the group’s decades-old insurgency against the Turkish government. The development comes as Turkiye’s military and allied militias have put pressure on Kurdish armed groups, including the PKK in Iraq and Syria.

Afghan Taliban Hit Several Positions in Pakistan in Retaliatory Strikes

The Afghan Taliban has confirmed it targeted several positions inside Pakistan in response to earlier Pakistani airstrikes inside Afghanistan. The attacks likely targeted military or paramilitary positions along the Pakistani side of the border. The Afghan Taliban does not have the military resources to strike deeper inside Pakistan and is unlikely to escalate the issue officially unless Pakistan renews targeting inside Pakistan. The Afghan Taliban is likely to encourage attacks inside Pakistan via groups like the Pakistani Taliban (TTP). Pakistan claimed it was targeting TTP positions inside Afghanistan that had been planning attacks inside Pakistan.

Ruling Georgian Dream Party Inaugurates New President

Mikheil Kavelashvili has been inaugurated as Georgia's new president. Though the Georgian presidency is a figurehead position, the ruling Georgian Dream party handpicked Kavelashvili to cement the party's control over the state. However, outgoing President Salome Zourabichvili has refused to step down, saying she is the "only legitimate president" as the opposition continues to dispute the October parliamentary elections. Many Western officials have backed Zourabichvili's move; U.S. Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) will introduce legislation prohibiting the United States from recognizing Kavelashvili as Georgia's president.
