State of Emergency in Trinidad and Tobago over Gang Violence
Trinidad and Tobago declared a two-day state of emergency on December 31, 2024, due to a surge in violent murders, allowing police to conduct warrantless searches and arrests. The country recorded 623 homicides in 2024, a rise from previous years, with officials labeling the violence an "epidemic." Despite the emergency measures, no curfews or movement restrictions have been imposed to limit economic disruption.
Incumbent Croatian President Faces Conservative Rival in Election Run-Off
In the first round of Croatia’s presidential election held on December 29, 2024, incumbent President Zoran Milanović secured 49.1 percent of the vote, narrowly missing the majority needed to avoid a runoff. His main challenger, Dragan Primorac of the ruling conservative HDZ party, received 19.35 percent of the vote. A second round is scheduled for January 12, 2025.
Police Disrupts Attack on Church in Spain
On December 31, 2024, Spanish police announced it had arrested four individuals planning an attack on a church outside of the capital, Madrid. The arrests were made on December 19, with the attackers aiming to target large gatherings related to Christmas. The attackers were likely inspired by Islamic State (IS) or al-Qaeda propaganda calling for attacks in Europe. Israel's war with Hamas has seen a reemergence of these sorts of attacks across Europe where the risk remains throughout the holiday period.
