European Union Aviation Safety Agency Expands Safety Warnings Over Russian
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) expanded its safety warnings for Russian airspace to advise airlines against operating in Russian airspace west of longitude 60° East at all flight levels. The recommendation comes after Russian air defenses mistakenly shot down Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 in late December 2024.
Armenian Cabinet Endorses Legislation on Beginning EU Accession Talks
Armenia's cabinet endorsed a draft bill to begin the country's process to join the European Union. The draft law will now be presented to parliament for a vote. Since Azerbaijan annexed Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023, Armenia has drifted away from its historical ally Russia towards closer relations with the West. This signal that Armenia is ready to begin EU accession talks marks perhaps the most poignant rejection of Russia's influence in recent years. Russia has criticized Armenia's decision and said it views the draft legislation as the start of Armenia's withdrawal from the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) bloc.
Tensions Between Mali and Algeria Rise
At the time of writing, tensions between Mali and Algeria have risen after Mali accused Algeria of helping the Tuareg rebel group operating in northern Mali last week. Algerian officials denied the accusations and stated they would respond with "firm measures" against Mali. Mali accused Algeria of interfering with its internal affairs on the same day that Algeria secured a temporary membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Algerian officials stated that their priority at the UNSC was to support counterterrorism efforts in Africa. Both countries have differing strategies regarding counterterrorism efforts in Africa.
