Israel Approves and Outlines Details of Ceasefire
After a six-hour-long cabinet meeting, Israel has approved the Gaza ceasefire, whose first phase—lasting six weeks—will begin on Sunday with the first of a series of hostage-for-prisoner exchanges. Israel has agreed to release 737 prisoners and detainees, while Hamas will free 33 hostages, including children, women (including female soldiers), and men aged over 50. The Israeli military has stated that its troops in Gaza are preparing for the implementation of the ceasefire. Meanwhile, the Palestinian health ministry has reported the deaths of more than 100 Palestinians since the announcement of the ceasefire on January 15.
TikTok to Go Dark on January 19 for American Users Unless U.S. Provides Clarity
TikTok has said it will “go dark” for its American customer base, comprising 170 million users, because of a ban that resulted from allegations that the Chinese-owned platform is a likely threat to U.S. national security. A statement on TikTok’s website has asked for a “definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement” from the Biden Administration.
Bulgaria’s Parliament Approves Zhelyazkov Coalition Government into Office
Bulgaria's parliament approved a new coalition government led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov of the center-right GERB party. The coalition includes the pro-Russia Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the populist There Is Such a People (ITN) party. The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), representing the ethnic Turkish minority, provided external support without joining the coalition.
