Israel-Gaza Ceasefire Begins amid Looming Uncertainty; Houthis to Pause Attacks
The release of 90 Palestinians and three Israeli hostages marked the first phase of the Israel-Gaza ceasefire that began on Sunday. Displaced Palestinians have also started returning to their homes amid looming uncertainties regarding the truce. Meanwhile, a Houthi spokesperson has stated the armed group will pause attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea during the Israel-Hamas ceasefire but will resume in the event of any violations. Despite the pause, most shipment companies are unlikely to resume transiting the Red Sea until a longer-term solution to Houthi attacks.
Former Finance Minister of Mozambique Sentenced in USD 2 Billion Fraud and Money Laundering Scheme
The former Finance Minister of Mozambique was sentenced today to 102 months in prison for their role in a USD 2 billion international fraud, bribery, and money laundering scheme, in which they received USD 7 million in bribes to approve fraudulent loans. According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, they received USD 7 million in bribes in exchange for signing guarantees on behalf of the Republic of Mozambique to secure funding for three loans for maritime projects.
Russia and Iran Sign Strategic Partnership Agreement
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have signed a 20-year strategic partnership treaty. This agreement underscores how the two countries have developed significantly closer ties since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to the two leaders, the treaty enhances cooperation in the military, economic, science, education, and cultural sectors. Russia and Iran will likely focus on the economic and military aspects of the agreement, especially as both countries' economies struggle under Western sanctions.
