Russia to Possibly Supply Gas to Transnistria

Russian state-media reported Gazprom would resume gas supplies to the disputed territory of Transnistria on February 1 via the TurkStream pipeline. Russian gas deliveries to Transnistria were halted on January 1, after the deal regulating the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine expired. Transnistria is entirely dependent on Russian gas, which accounted for 100 percent of Transnistria's gas and electricity needs prior to January 1. Since supplies ended, Transnistria halted all non-essential industrial operations while residents went without heating. According to Russian sources, Gazprom secured a one-month booking with the TurkStream Pipeline to deliver 3.1 million cubic meters of gas to Transnistria in February. In response to the news, the Moldovan government has requested more details from Moscow about its intentions, saying Russia did not inform Moldova of its plans. According to an existing contract with Gazprom, only the Moldovan company Moldovagaz is allowed to make gas deliveries to Transnistria. Per the terms of this agreement, Moldovan officials are requesting Gazprom deliver the gas to Moldovagaz, which will in turn make deliveries to Transnistria.

Kenya Scraps Pre-Authorization Checks for African Travelers

The Kenyan government announced that travelers from African countries will no longer be required to complete a pre-travel requirement form to enter the country and will be permitted to stay up to 60 days. Officials stated that travelers from Somalia and Libya will still be required to undergo additional pre-authorization checks to enter Kenya due to security concerns. The policy change was initiated to promote tourism and enhance the ease of travel for visitors. In January 2024, Kenya stripped the visa requirement for nearly all foreign countries to promote travel to the country. However, most foreign travelers outside of the African continent must still complete an Electronic Travel Authorization form.

U.S and China Hold Strategic Discussion

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping recently discussed key topics of interest including trade, TikTok, and Taiwan. Trump expressed optimism about reaching a trade deal with China during the call and emphasized tariffs as a significant leverage tool but stated a preference for resolving disputes without imposing them.
