U.S. President Trump Pushes to Increase Defense Capabilities and Cooperation in Indo-Pacific Region
U.S. President Trump issued an executive order on the missile defense capabilities of the United States in the Indo-Pacific region, specifically focusing on South Korea. According to the executive order on “Iron Dome for America” released by the White House on January 27, President Trump stated, “The United States continues to cooperate with allies and partners on missile defense to help defend the people and troops of our allies, as well as forward-deployed U.S. forces.” President Trump called for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) deployment in South Korea, where thousands of U.S. troops are deployed. Historically, these agreements have incited rallies and protests by South Koreans accusing them of causing unnecessary tensions with North Korea, China, and Russia. Additionally, President Trump called on Japan to increase cooperation on counter-missile threat capabilities in the region as well.
