Sudan Announces New Government Despite Rebels Holding Almost Half the Country
On February 10, 2025, Army leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is effectively the President of Sudan, said he would form a "technocratic" wartime government with a prime minister once he defeats the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia group. Al-Burhan was speaking as his forces advanced on the capital, Khartoum. Sudanese forces have made steady gains against the RSF and appear confident of retaking the capital soon. The RSF still controls most of the western half of Sudan but has struggled against recent upgrades to the Sudanese air force's capabilities.
Outgoing President of Romania Quits to Pre-Empt Impeachment Bid before Election Re-Run
On February 10, 2025, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation, effective February 12, 2025, following mounting pressure from far-right opposition parties seeking his impeachment. This decision comes after the annulment of the December 2024 presidential election due to alleged Russian interference, which led to political instability in the country. Senate Speaker Ilie Bolojan will serve as interim president until new elections are held in May.
President Trump Announces 25 Percent Tariffs on all Steel and Aluminium Imports
President Trump ordered a 25 percent import tax on steel and aluminum to reportedly strengthen domestic production and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. Trade partners, including Canada, have expressed concerns over potential economic impacts.
