Authorities Arrest over 1,300 in Crackdown Following Unrest in Bangladesh
Sources reported that a crackdown by Bangladeshi authorities resulted in the arrests of over 1,300 people accused of fomenting unrest at the behest of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. This comes after a crowd of anti-Hasina protesters attempted to bulldoze buildings affiliated with her family on February 5 and after clashes between pro- and anti-Hasina factions in Gazipur on February 7. Bangladesh’s interim government, in power since Hasina resigned in August 2024, has been forced to rely increasingly on law enforcement activity to maintain order as Hasina’s Awami League party reasserts itself in national politics. Additional unrest could destabilize the country’s fragile economy, especially its textile manufacturing sector which is vulnerable to transportation disruptions and political protest movements.
Russia Releases American Prisoner
On February 11, 2025, Russia released an American prisoner after Steve Witcoff—U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy—visited Russia. This marks the first visit of a high-ranking U.S. government official to Russia since 2021. U.S. officials described Fogel's release as "a show of good faith from the Russians" ahead of future peace negotiations with Ukraine.
BJP Wins Legislative Majority in Delhi, India
Indian authorities announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Prime Minister Narendra Modi triumphed in the Delhi legislative election held on February 5. The BJP won 48 of the union territory’s 70 seats, while the formerly ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won just 22. It is the first time in 27 years the BJP has controlled the national capital territory. The AAP has won resounding victories since 2013, but public opinion soured after key AAP figures became embroiled in public scandals including allegations of corruption.
