European Parliament Adopts Resolution Refusing to Recognize Georgian Dream Government

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution recognizing Salome Zourabichvili as Georgia’s legitimate president and calling for the international community to boycott Georgia's ruling elite from the Georgian Dream party. The resolution reiterated Europe's position that new transparent parliamentary elections are the only solution to Georgia's ongoing political crisis. Georgians have engaged in daily mass demonstrations after the ruling Georgian Dream party reportedly "rigged" the October 2024 parliamentary elections. On February 13, protest organizers announced a general strike scheduled to coincide with Soviet Occupation Day on February 25. The holiday is meant to commemorate the Red Army's invasion of Georgia in 1921. Organizers likely chose this day to symbolize their opposition to the Georgian Dream's associations with the Russian government.

Russia and Sudan Reportedly Agrees on Russian Red Sea Military Base

Russia has reportedly agreed with the Sudanese military on the establishment of a Russian naval base on the Red Sea. Sudan has been in a civil war between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and the Sudanese military led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is effectively the President of Sudan. The military largely controls eastern Sudan, where the base will be located, while RSF is rapidly losing ground around the central capital of Khartoum and further eastward. The deal comes after Russia reportedly aided Sudan in turning the tide of the civil war.

Philippines to Modernize Military with Indian’s Missiles to Counter China

The Philippines armed forces said they would buy more military hardware to modernize its arsenal, including additional BrahMos missiles from India and at least two submarines. The Philippines has stepped up its military preparation to counter China in the South China Sea. Last year, it set up a new anti-ship missile base in Zambales province on the west coast of Luzon island. With the new missile upgrades, the Philippines could reach 300 km (186.411 miles), targeting the islands China claims including Scarborough Shoal and Second Thomas Shoal. The military upgrades and multilateral alliance indicate the Philippines is taking proactive measures ahead of midterm elections in May, likely hoping to influence voters concerned about the threat from China
