U.S. Backs FATF's Continued Countermeasures Against Iran's Terrorist Financing

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has been working on proliferation financing and terrorist financing risks, financial inclusion, and standards for domestic and cross-border payments, including agreeing to release draft updates for public consultation. FATF is the global standard-setting body for anti-money laundering, countering the financing of terrorism, and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. “The United States welcomes the FATF’s reaffirmation of countermeasures against Iran for the terrorist financing risk emanating from that country, as well as the continued work to strengthen the international financial system against all illicit finance,” said Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent.

Trump Administration Likely Seeking Quick End to Ukraine Conflict

Several notable developments over the weekend suggest the Trump administration is seeking a quick end to the conflict, likely on terms that Ukraine will view as unfavorable. On February 22, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump is "confident" the United States and Russia will secure a deal to end the conflict as early as this week. On February 24, the United States and Russia voted against a United Nations (UN) General Assembly resolution condemning Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The measure ultimately passed with 93 votes in favor. However, the vote marks a significant shift in U.S. policy toward the conflict.

Treasury Targets Covert Iranian UAV Procurement Network

The United States has sanctioned six entities based in Hong Kong and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), engaged in the procurement of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) components for Iranian firm Pishtazan Kavosh Gostar Boshra (PKGB) and its subsidiary Narin Sepehr Mobin Isatis (NSMI). These entities operate as front companies and facilitate the purchase and shipment of key components for the benefit of PKGB and NSMI, which serve as key suppliers for Iran’s UAV and ballistic missile programs.
