China-Linked Threat Actors Target AI Experts in the United States and United kingdom

Source: https://thehackernews.com/2026/10/china-aligned-ta419-targets-us-ai.html

What we know: China-linked espionage group TA419 has been observed targeting AI experts at U.S. think tanks, universities, and law firms, including specialists in AI policy. The group reportedly impersonated prominent economists, AI policymakers, and an Anthropic employee in phishing campaigns to steal credentials.

Context: TA419 reportedly used tailored outreach and shortened links to redirect victims to fake certain login pages that used AI-in-the-middle (AitM) and Frameless browser-in-the-browser (BitB) techniques to steal credentials and session information. Separately, United kingdom’s intelligence agency has warned that information from the work of more than 100 U.K.-linked academics has been used in research funded through China Academy of General Technology (CAGT), which it assesses supports the development of espionage capabilities in areas including AI and cybersecurity.

Analyst note: Targeting policy experts rather than only AI developers likely indicates an intelligence requirement for decision-making and policy direction, potentially giving China earlier insight into forthcoming restrictions, technology-transfer controls, and U.S. AI strategy.

Threat Actor Advertises Over 102 Million Alleged B2B Records

What we know: ZeroFox has observed untested threat actor "B2BMatrix" advertising four country-specific “B2B" datasets containing over 102 million records allegedly from RevenueBase—a U.S.-based business-to-business (B2B) data infrastructure company—on dark web forums PwnForums and DarkForums.

Context: The records allegedly include job titles, direct phone numbers, LinkedIn profile URLs, company revenue ranges, technographics, and funding details. The database was observed to contain the largest number of records from the United States, accounting for approximately 83 million records, followed by Canada, the United Kingdom, and France. The threat actor provided sample datasets as supposed proof.

Analyst note: Although the claim could not be independently verified at the time of writing, at least some of the advertised data is likely scraped or aggregated from public-facing sources. While B2BMatrix holds “GOD-tier” status and a VIP designation on the forums, which likely indicate an established reputation among forum users, these designations do not independently confirm the authenticity of the advertised data. Given that the dataset appears to comprise compiled and aggregated information, its breadth and structure are likely to attract interest from prospective buyers regardless of whether the data was scraped or potentially obtained through other means.

Alleged IRGC-Linked Mabna Institute Hacker Extradited to the United States

What we know: An alleged member of Iran-based Mabna Institute was extradited from Europe to the United States to face charges over cyberattacks targeting hundreds of universities, companies, government agencies, and NGOs. The alleged activity involved stealing more than 31 TB of academic data, intellectual property, and email accounts, with losses reportedly over USD 3.4 billion.

Context: In August, the United States indicted 17 members associated with the Mabna Institute, reportedly an Iran-linked private organization and hacking group, over cyberattacks targeting hundreds of entities worldwide, including attacks allegedly conducted for the IRGC. The extradition is notable as Iranian state-linked hackers rarely travel to countries where they risk extradition to the United States. Separately, the U.S. Treasury Department has sanctioned eight Tren de Aragua-linked individuals over ATM jackpotting attacks that allegedly stole more than USD 40 million from U.S. financial institutions.

Analyst note: It is likely that this extradition can deter other Iran-backed hackers from traveling to jurisdictions that cooperate with U.S. law enforcement. U.S. prosecutors may also use the case to gather evidence on how the IRGC directed Mabna Institute and strengthen cases against the other suspected individuals.

DATA BREACHES INTELLIGENCE

DTU discloses data breach: The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has confirmed a data breach after an attacker used compromised credentials to access DTUBasen, its identity and access management system, potentially exposing data belonging to up to 200,000 current and former users dating back to 2003. Exposed data includes Danish civil registration numbers, home addresses, employment details, and next-of-kin contact information.

Frontline Education’s reported data breach: Frontline Education, an edtech company, has reportedly confirmed a data breach after attackers exploited a vulnerability in a third-party application to gain unauthorized access to its systems. Exposed data reportedly includes employee Social Security Numbers (SSNs), email addresses, and physical addresses.

DEEP AND DARK WEB INTELLIGENCE

PwnForums user RedStone: Untested threat actor “RedStone” has advertised a database allegedly associated with Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA). The database allegedly contains over 300,000 records including personal data such as, phone numbers, addresses, dates of birth, VAT numbers, and player photos. Additionally, its alleged inclusion of historical player, club, and statistical data likely indicates that at least some of the information was scraped or aggregated from publicly accessible sources.

VULNERABILITY AND EXPLOIT INTELLIGENCE

CVE-2026-88779: Citrix has released emergency updates for a zero-day memory buffer vulnerability in NetScaler ADC and Gateway appliances using SAML authentication with Gateway or AAA functionality. The flaw is being actively exploited in targeted attacks to cause denial of service and has also been observed in attacks involving malware payloads and potential remote code execution.

Affected products: The affected products are listed in the advisory.
