Over 8 Million Individuals Affected in Denmark Population Registry Breach

Source: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/denmark-population-registry-data-breach-affects-88-million-people/

What we know: The Danish government has confirmed that unauthorized users gained access to its national civil registry, the Central Person Register (CPR), containing citizen information in September 2026. Threat actors abused a private company’s legitimate access to retrieve data linked to approximately 8.8 million individuals.

Context: The exposed data reportedly includes names, addresses, CPR identification numbers, dates of birth, and other registry information. Additionally, Denmark’s Data Protection Agency said a very large number of automated searches were allegedly conducted to identify valid CPR numbers. Similar government-sector data exposure incidents were reported in Germany, Spain, and France in 2026, including alleged leaks of citizen registry data affecting millions of individuals.

Analyst note: The data is likely to be useful for identity fraud, phishing, and social-engineering activity. The repeated population-level data breaches across Europe is also likely to be leveraged by Russian threat actors as part of alleged ongoing hybrid warfare, potentially enabling targeting of high-value individuals like politicians and government officials. Threat actors are also likely to combine the data with other datasets or credentials to improve targeting, package and resell records, or support attempts to gain initial access to downstream organizations.

FBI Reportedly Made Multiple Arrests in ShinyHunters Investigations

What we know: The FBI has reportedly carried out multiple arrests in its ongoing investigation into extortion group ShinyHunters, including the detention of a key member in Jordan, known as Rey. The suspect is reportedly cooperating with authorities to identify other members of the group.

Context: The detained member is alleged to be the technical operator of the Scattered LAPSUS$ Hunters group, which also included actors from ShinyHunters group. His arrest follows the Dutch National Police's detention of an individual alleged to be one of ShinyHunters' leaders. The arrests come weeks after ShinyHunters hacked the FBI's jobs portal. Despite the arrests, ZeroFox observed ShinyHunters' leak site updated on October 5, 2026, with new postings targeting a U.S.-based medical device manufacturer and a U.S. automotive parts retailer—both of which were subsequently removed from the site.

Analyst note: If the alleged member’s cooperation is genuine, his insider knowledge of the group’s infrastructure and operational methods is very likely to accelerate further arrests. ShinyHunters' resilience in the face of sustained law enforcement action almost certainly reflects a decentralized structure in which the arrest of individual members does not immediately disrupt the group's operational capacity.

Geopolitical Focus: US Arrests Alleged Chinese Spy, British Airways Flight Emergency, Measles Outbreak, and More

  • Air raid sirens were reportedly heard during the German Chancellor’s visit to Kyiv as Russian drones targeted the city's bridges. Separately, the head of German federal intelligence service (BND) warned that Russia’s undeclared shadow war against Germany could escalate the risk of violent conflict with Russia.
  • Yemeni pro-government forces backed by Saudi Arabia have reportedly claimed retaking control of Red Sea city of Mocha, 50 miles north of Bab-el-Mandep strait, from Iran-backed Houthis.
  • A British Airways Chicago bound flight reportedly declared emergency following 27,000ft steep descent before landing back safely at Heathrow following a technical issue. Passengers aboard reportedly claimed turbulence as the cause, resulting in oxygen masks deployed from the ceiling.
  • New York has declared a statewide disaster emergency over a measles outbreak. An executive order has been issued to expand the number of health professionals to administer vaccines. As per official records, nearly 3,900 measles cases have been reported across the United States, with Pennsylvania reporting the largest outbreak.
  • U.S. authorities arrested an individual at Los Angeles Airport for allegedly acting as an unregistered agent of China. The individual is accused of surveilling relatives of a high-ranking Taiwanese official at their U.S. home.

EMERGING / AI THREAT INTELLIGENCE

AI tools suspected in South Korean bank hacks

South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung reportedly said that AI tools are suspected to have been used in a series of coordinated cyberattacks against multiple South Korean banks. The AI server infrastructure has reportedly been linked to ARTEX AI, an open-source AI-powered penetration testing framework, though no threat actor attribution has been confirmed.

Rogue OpenAI agents linked to Wikimedia outage

The Wikimedia Foundation has disclosed that rogue OpenAI agents were likely responsible for a partial outage of its Wikidata Query Service in May 2026. The agents allegedly visited millions of pages, made data queries, and unauthorized and potentially malicious edits to Wikimedia platforms.

DEEP AND DARK WEB INTELLIGENCE

BreachForums user 404crew cyber team: Untested threat actor “404Crew Cyber Team” has leaked data allegedly associated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on a predominantly English-language dark web forum BreachForums (breached[.]st). The threat actor made a subsequent post on October 4, 2026, which mentioned that the dataset contained names, photographs, passport numbers, residential addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and signatures. The actor threatened to leak one file every hour till relevant authorities made contact.

  • In July, ZeroFox had observed 404Crew Cyber Team claiming to have breached a UAE government website. Analysis revealed the sample dataset was likely aggregated and repackaged from infostealer credential logs.
  • Based on the threat actor’s history, the Ukraine Foreign Ministry data breach claims are likely false or based on recycled data.

VULNERABILITY AND EXPLOIT INTELLIGENCE

CVE-2026-96940: Microsoft has released out-of-band updates for a high-severity authorization flaw in Microsoft Exchange Server that could enable an authenticated attacker over the network to access and read other users’ mailboxes, including emails and attachments. The vulnerability requires low privileges and does not require user interaction.

Affected products: The affected products are listed in the advisory.
