Joint Naval Patrol in South China Sea

On March 29, the United States announced it would launch joint naval patrols in the South China Sea along with Japan and the Philippines. This came just after Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. threatened countermeasures against aggressive Chinese naval maneuvers in disputed waters in the South China Sea claimed by both sides. China has similar maritime territorial disputes with Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Brunei, but the one with the Philippines has been the most violent, with several collisions between Chinese naval boats and Filipino coast guard boats. This is likely because the Philippines have been the most vocal about confronting China and securing alliances with the United States that would help them in the event of a larger Chinese naval incursion. Japan is another country that has taken notable military positions in recent years. Japan's defense budget has increased drastically, and it has expressed strong support for the Philippines before. China has similar maritime territorial disputes in the East China Sea, and Japan is likely concerned about military threats from China and North Korea.

3 Top Iranian Commanders Are Reported Killed in Israeli Strike in Syria

Israeli warplanes struck a building that was a part of the Iranian Embassy complex in Damascus killing three senior commanders and four officers. Reportedly, four Israeli officials have confirmed Israel's responsibility for the strike while denying that the airstrikes could have any political implications when it struck the embassy. This attack occurred as Israeli soldiers withdrew from Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital complex, which sustained significant damage during a two-week raid.

ZeroFox Intelligence April 2024 Geopolitical Brief

In this monthly intelligence brief, ZeroFox researchers, April will see the start of a new, and potentially dangerous, operating environment for Western firms in Hong Kong. In late March, Hong Kong authorities enacted a new national security law that bears a similarity to new laws pushed in mainland China that limit access to data and place severe penalties on those who access it. This brief covers a dangerous security environment that is emerging in the Caribbean region. Haiti presents the biggest risks, but there are also security risks stemming from the near collapse of Cuba's economy and Venezuela's crackdown on the opposition ahead of the July elections. In India, a six-week-long election cycle presents unique risks, although the political outcome is all but certain. There are also elections and other votes in Slovakia, Croatia, Ecuador, and South Korea in April.
