ZeroFox Intelligence April 2024 Geopolitical Brief
In this monthly intelligence brief, ZeroFox researchers forecasted that April will see the start of a new, and potentially dangerous, operating environment for Western firms in Hong Kong. In late March, Hong Kong authorities enacted a new national security law that bears a similarity to new laws pushed in mainland China that limit access to data and place severe penalties on those who access it. This brief covers a dangerous security environment that is emerging in the Caribbean region. Haiti presents the biggest risks, but there are also security risks stemming from the near collapse of Cuba's economy and Venezuela's crackdown on the opposition ahead of the July elections. In India, a six-week-long election cycle presents unique risks, although the political outcome is all but certain. There are also elections and other votes in Slovakia, Croatia, Ecuador, and South Korea in April.
Simultaneous Attacks in Iran Kills At Least Three Security Personnel
At least three security personnel have been killed in attacks targeting military stations in the cities of Rask and Chabahar and claimed by the Jaish al-Adl group. The casualties include the deputy of a police station in Chabahar. The attacks came approximately 48 hours after Israeli warplanes struck the Iranian Embassy complex in Damascus, killing three senior commanders and four officers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. According to a statement from Iran's Deputy Interior Minister, the assailants were unsuccessful “in their goal of capturing the Guards headquarters in Chabahar and Rask and are under siege.”
Taiwan Hit by Strongest Quake in 25 years, Four Deaths Reported
Taiwan experienced its strongest earthquake in 25 years, which had a magnitude of 7.2 with its epicenter in Hualien. The earthquake, in the time of writing, killed four people and left 50 people injured. According to news sources, several buildings have collapsed with people trapped while rescue operations are underway. Authorities report that the earthquake had a depth of 21 miles, with aftershocks felt throughout the day. The earthquake triggered several tsunami warnings in Japan and the Philippines, which have now been lifted.
