ZeroFox Intelligence Flash Report - Israel’s Limited Incursion into Rafah and Campus Protests
Israel has begun a limited incursion into Rafah, ostensibly to counter smuggling operations from Egypt, but also reportedly to pressure Hamas into agreeing to a ceasefire that is more favorable to Israel. Progressive limited operations into Rafah could see Israel avoid heavy international criticism that a larger assault would likely bring, while also achieving the domestic political aims of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Hamas will almost certainly remain a capable fighting force in the Gaza Strip, regardless of the outcome in Rafah. U.S. university protests have expanded globally, but protesters may move on to other targets as the school year ends but the war continues. Israeli Independence Day (May 14) and Palestinian al-Nakba Day (May 15) are traditional protest days for activists on both sides, but the commemorations and protests will likely be more disruptive because of the events in Rafah and ongoing campus protests.
Russia Begins Offensive Efforts in Kharkiv
Russian forces have made marginal advances in areas of Kharkiv Oblast. Russia was largely expected to conduct new operations in Kharkiv Oblast during its expected spring offensive. While Russia was able to capture several small villages over the weekend, it is unlikely to seize the city of Kharkiv during its offensive.
Billboard Collapse in Mumbai Kills 14 and Injures 60 Amid Raging Dust Storm
During a fierce dust storm in Mumbai, a billboard collapsed on a refueling station, killing 14 people and injuring at least 60. Civic authorities are investigating whether the billboard advertisement agency responsible for the collapsed billboard had legal permissions to install it at that location. India’s National Disaster Response Force teams are looking for survivors trapped under the debris, while the Maharashtra State Government has taken up the responsibility of providing treatment to those injured. The Chief Minister of the state has announced that a survivor’s compensation of INR 500,000 (USD 5,987) will be given to the families of the deceased.
