ZeroFox Intelligence Brief - Continuity Likely After Mexico Elections
Like the elections in India, South Africa, and now the United Kingdom (UK), there is a clear frontrunner in Mexico’s June 2 general election. Presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum of the ruling Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party has maintained a 15–30 percent polling lead over her main opponent, Xóchitl Gálvez, for months and is very likely to be Mexico’s next president. Morena will also likely win most of the other 20,000 posts for governor, congress, and local representatives. What matters is the margin of victory; a narrower-than-expected victory will make it difficult for the Morena party to achieve its overarching political reforms and goal of dominating Mexico’s political institutions and economy. As with most major elections around the world, orchestrated disinformation campaigns are likely to pose a threat to informed voter behavior. As is normal during Mexican campaigning, violence by criminal groups—towards voters, candidates, and even third-party entities such as election observers and journalists—remains a significant threat to the integrity of the elections.
Global Outcry over Rafah Tent Camp Attack
Countries across the world have expressed concern over an Israeli attack on the Tel Al-Sultan neighborhood in the Gazan city of Rafah, which led to a fire in tents and metal shelters and killed 45 people (including women, children, and elderly people). The Israeli military is reportedly investigating reports that a strike supposedly aimed against Hamas commanders caused the fire.
Over One Million Evacuated as Cyclone Remal Brings Heavy Rain to Bangladesh and India
Tropical cyclone Remal hit Bangladesh and eastern India, causing heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread damage. Over one million people were evacuated, with volunteers and army personnel aiding cleanup and relief efforts. Remal brought gusts of up to 135 km/h (84 mph) and is moving northward across Bangladesh and its adjoining West Bengal (Indian state) coasts. The highest alert signal (Great Danger Signal 10) was raised in Bangladesh, and fishing vessels were advised to stay sheltered. Power outages and infrastructure damage were reported in Bangladesh, with about two million people living in affected areas. Kolkata's main international airport was closed, affecting flights. This cyclone coincided with severe heat waves in western and central India, with temperatures exceeding 45°C (113°F) in some areas.
