ZeroFox Intelligence September 2024 Geopolitical Brief

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the next several weeks is unlikely, which means international shipping and oil prices will remain volatile. Social unrest linked to France’s government formation is very likely in September 2024. Germany’s ruling political parties are likely to be defeated by a wide margin in a series of September state elections. Despite immigration being the primary campaign issue, Germany’s sluggish economy is the bigger long-term threat to the country. Ukraine’s unprecedented incursion into Russia will likely heavily influence its wartime strategy. Russian retaliation encompassing a range of hybrid measures is likely in the coming weeks.

Thousands Protest in Israel After Recovery of 6 Hostages Killed in Gaza

Mass protests erupted across Israeli cities on Sunday after the Israeli military confirmed the death of six hostages, including an Israeli American, who were being held in Gaza. The announcement came after the military recovered the bodies of the hostages, who were found in a tunnel beneath Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israeli Health Ministry confirmed that the hostages had been shot at close range in the last days of August. One hostage was found alive and has been rescued since. In response to the escalating situation, Israel’s labor union declared a strike. Meanwhile, the Israeli police reported the arrest of 29 people in Tel Aviv, with additional arrests in Jerusalem and Haifa.

Clashes Between Cartel Elements Continue in Multiple Michoacán, Mexico Municipalities

Fiighting continued between cartel-affiliated groups throughout the state of Michoacán in the municipalities of Tepalcatepec, Apatzingán and Buenavista. According to reports, both the Buenavista-Peribán highway and Apatzingán-Buenavista highway were blockaded with groups of armed men fighting with each other. Mexican security forces have been deployed to the town of Buenavista, but there continue to be reports of clashes between armed groups. According to military reports, the fighting is the result of territorial disputes between the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel – Los Viagras alliance and Tepalcatepec cartel. In response to the violence, community members took over the Periférico ring road in front of Casa Michoacán in protest, demanding that the government deploy more security forces to restore stability to the region.
