Collision Between American Airlines Flight and Black Hawk Takes Lives
Sixty seven passengers died after an American Airlines passenger jet collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport on Wednesday, January 29. Rescue efforts and investigations are ongoing at the crash site outside Washington, D.C. The American Airlines Flight 5342, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, was approaching the runway when it collided midair with the Black Hawk, which was on a training flight. The crash caused the plane and helicopter to break apart in the water.
ZeroFox Intelligence Assessment - Russia-Ukraine Forecast 2025
The incoming Trump administration is likely to be one of the most consequential, yet unpredictable, influences on the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2025. Neither Ukraine nor Russia likely have the military resources or capacity to win the war outright on the battlefield in 2025. As a result, the conflict is highly unlikely to see any strategic-level offensives that alter the course of the war. The Trump administration is likely to pursue diplomatic talks shortly after taking office to achieve a quick end to the conflict. Both Russia and Ukraine have indicated they would be open to such discussions, though numerous roadblocks may hinder the process. The state of its economy is highly likely to be Russia’s largest vulnerability in 2025, though President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to let the economy influence his strategy in Ukraine.
Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Deadline Extended
The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon has been extended until February 18, 2025. Initially brokered in November 2024, the deal required Hezbollah's withdrawal from southern Lebanon and Israel's troop withdrawal, however, Israeli forces stayed beyond the deadline. The extension follows mediated talks, with plans to negotiate the return of Lebanese prisoners. Ongoing tensions and the extended ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon saw the deaths of at least 22 people and 124 injured in southern Lebanon.
